Athletes for Art Renaissance Tour (AART) recently held their Athlete for Art Exhibition at the luxurious Mondrian Hotel in Miami, Florida. The benefit event was packed with notable celebrities and art connoisseurs—generally people with caring hearts that found time during their busy holiday schedules—to help support Smile Design Gallery (SDG), a charitable organization that sells art—in order to provide free dental care for people in need. Amongst the key supporters at the AART benefit exhibition was Grammy Award winning producer, philanthropist and art enthusiast—Swizz Beatz, who recently curated ‘The Dean Collection’ for SCOPE at Art Basel Miami Beach. “The Smile Design Gallery does lots of amazing work,” said Swizz Beatz, whose ongoing contributions have aided SDG in treating well over 500 patients since its inception in the spring of 2013. “Shout out to my brother Grady Spivey and (celebrity dentist) Dr. Lee Gause in supporting art and a great cause.”“My dental office used to be an art gallery,” said Dr. Gause, a graduate of Howard University’s School of Dentistry. “I figured—why not convert it back to a gallery from time to time, and do what galleries do best—sell art? And in selling art, we can raise funds to treat people who can’t afford dental care.” Not a bad idea—considering the fact that dental decay is the most common disease in children living in poor communities (more than asthma and the common cold). So—in order to bring his charitable vision to fruition, Dr. Lee joined forces with the founder of AART—Jumoke Mendez, and the rest is history..... ![]() THE MISS BLACK NEW YORK AND MISS BLACK NEW JERSEY USA Pageants are affiliates of THE MISS BLACK USA PAGEANT AND SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION, INC. The mission of the Miss Black USA Pageant is to provide educational opportunites to outstanding young women of color and develop the 'whole woman:mind, body and spirit.' The Miss Black New York and Miss Black New Jersey Pageants are produced by the Amoeji Foudation. The Amoeji Foundation's mission is to mentor and advocate for underrepresented young women and instill valuable tools in them to ensure they lead successful and fulfilling lives. The foundation promotes entrepreneurship, develops workshops and provides skills training. I had the opportunity to serve as a preliminary judge of the Personal Interview sections of both pageants. I met many exceptional women of color. The contestants ranged from wealthy to poor socio-economic backgrounds but one thing was common: they were determined to commit to the upliftment of young minority women. They all had a drive to do better in life in order to be not only an example, but an advocate for young minority women. The platforms they chose ranged from socio-mental, socio-political and health and wellness issues. The finanl events of the pageant was held November 5th, 2011 at the Aaron Davis Hall in Harlem, NY. The 2012 Miss Black New York and Miss Black New Jersey were chosen. The picture provided is of the winners. I pray God blesses them in all of their future endeavors. ******** E. Williams - NJ Top 5 "My feet are swollen, my legs hurt, heel broke, and I'm broke (financially) all because of this pageant. The thing is I would do it all over again. I had an amazing time and experience. It was refreshing to see women of color strong, educated, outgoing, and down to Earth. The most rewarding part was making top five and my mother saying I made her cry because she never saw that side of me. I have never danced before like that and did my talent until I got to the pageant. I have been through depression, self esteem was so low, and just thought I was a star no one would ever see. I have been through so much in my life and this is the best of it so far. For the first time in my life I put my heart into something and didn't run because of fear of losing. The pageant taught me to feed my faith to starve my fears. I wouldn't have changed anything. Thank you so much." I have learned of fool proof way of raising funds without coming out of pocket and putting a dent into your budget. This fundraising system has been used for over 30 years and customer satifaction has more than doubled!
